Dick DeVos is one of the most well-known entrepreneurs in the United States. He has been working with several companies, and proved that he can reach the top without the need of his parent’s influence. His first job was with Amway, where he joined in 1974. He held positions in several departments inside the company, including the research and development division, the manufacturing department, the marketing department, and the sales and finance division. Ten years of hard work and perseverance later, Dick DeVos was promoted as the executive vice president. He used his skill in expanding the business overseas, and in a short period of time, the revenue that Amway is making from foreign markets tripled. The sales that the overseas branches of Amway is making accounted for only 5% of the total company sales, but under the leadership of Dick DeVos, it rose to more than 50% of the total company sales. He left Amway after six years of being the company’s vice president.
When the DeVos family acquired the franchise for Orlando Magic, Dick DeVos became one of the owners, as his father split the ownership among his children. He was even chosen to become the president and the chief executive officer of the franchise, but he decided to step down in 1993 because of his decision to return to Amway. Dick DeVos’ father resigned as the company’s president, and he was chosen to succeed him. During his term as the president, Amway focused on foreign markets, and they expanded and started operating in more than 50 countries. Amway went under restructuring and rebranding, creating Alticor. Dick DeVos resigned after the company’s rebranding, and shifted to the Windquest Group serving as its president.
Currently, Dick DeVos is holding a variety of positions in different companies. Aside from being the president of The Windquest Group, he is also serving as: a member of the board of directors at Spectrum Health System; a member of the board of trustees at Health Care Foundation; a member of the board of directors at the Michigan State Chamber of Commerce; the founder and chairman of the West Michigan Aviation Academy; the chairman of the board of directors at the RDV Corporation; one of the governing boards of Orlando Magic; a member of the board of trustees at the Thunderbird School of Global Management; a member of the board of directors at the Willow Creek Association; co-chairman of the Grand Action Committee; and the founder and chairman of the Regional Air Alliance of West Michigan.
Senators McCain and Feingold once passed a bill designed to prevent corporations and private citizens form donating large amounts to political campaigns. It was hailed as a measure of campaign finance reform as it passed, but the bill contained a significant loop hole. It placed no limits on non-profit corporations and political action committees. Many non-profit corporations and new political action committees sprung up as a result.
Attempts to remove the influence of big money from politics did not end with the McCain-Feingold bill. Congress may have taken no action since the passage of the McCain-Feingold act, but people challenged it in court. One of the most infamous decisions ever handed down by the United States Supreme Court, the same organization that gave the American people the phrase separate but equal, was the Citizens United Decision.
In the Citizens United case, the supreme court ruled that it was unconstitutional to prevent certain electioneering decision from airing near an election. It upheld the requirement that the sponsors of such messages be disclosed. The politically conservative group wanted to air a fil critical of Hillary Clinton several days before a 2008 primary election.
The Supreme Court has routinely held that corporations have all the rights of an individual citizen. The same logic resulted in the more recent Hobby Lobby decision. End Citizens United and a growing number of citizens believe that the court’s ruling continues the undue influence of corporations on the United States’ political system.
Many Democratic party political candidates continue to support the End Citizens United organization, according to rollcall.com. In return, the organization backs candidates who support campaign finance reform.
End Citizens United shows no signs of giving up its quest to get money out of politics. It may be sometime before they see this goal realized. Lobbyist currently have access to people in the highest positions in congress. Many representatives and politicians use favors and gifts from lobbyists to expand their income. People who are not millionaires before they become members of congress often become millionaires soon after. It is this trend that End Citizens United wishes to end.
