Dick DeVos: Achieving Corporate Success

Dick DeVos is one of the most well-known entrepreneurs in the United States. He has been working with several companies, and proved that he can reach the top without the need of his parent’s influence. His first job was with Amway, where he joined in 1974. He held positions in several departments inside the company, including the research and development division, the manufacturing department, the marketing department, and the sales and finance division. Ten years of hard work and perseverance later, Dick DeVos was promoted as the executive vice president. He used his skill in expanding the business overseas, and in a short period of time, the revenue that Amway is making from foreign markets tripled. The sales that the overseas branches of Amway is making accounted for only 5% of the total company sales, but under the leadership of Dick DeVos, it rose to more than 50% of the total company sales. He left Amway after six years of being the company’s vice president.

When the DeVos family acquired the franchise for Orlando Magic, Dick DeVos became one of the owners, as his father split the ownership among his children. He was even chosen to become the president and the chief executive officer of the franchise, but he decided to step down in 1993 because of his decision to return to Amway. Dick DeVos’ father resigned as the company’s president, and he was chosen to succeed him. During his term as the president, Amway focused on foreign markets, and they expanded and started operating in more than 50 countries. Amway went under restructuring and rebranding, creating Alticor. Dick DeVos resigned after the company’s rebranding, and shifted to the Windquest Group serving as its president.
